Palestinian hospital officials said Israeli airstrikes on the southern city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip killed at least five people. More than half of the territory’s population of 2.3 million have sought refuge in Rafah. Israel has conducted near-daily raids there as it prepares for an offensive in the city. Four people were killed in Israeli tank shelling in central Gaza. Officials said that a ship traveling in the Gulf of Aden came under attack Thursday. It was the latest assault likely carried out by Yemen’s Houthi rebels over the Israel-Hamas war.

A Kentucky appeals court judge has denied Zedan Racing Stables’ requests for an emergency hearing and ruling that sought to allow Bob Baffert-trained Arkansas Derby winner Muth to run in next week’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Kentucky Court of Appeals Judge Jeff S. Taylor issued an order denying relief on Wednesday, saying Zedan’s motion failed to name the Hall of Fame trainer suspended by Churchill Downs as an “indispensable party” in its motion. A three-judge panel will hear the motions as standard procedure, but time is short for an immediate decision with eligible Derby horses required to be stabled at the track by Saturday morning. The post draw is Saturday evening.

The University of Virginia says concerns about hazing have prompted the school to terminate one local fraternity and suspend three others on its Charlottesville campus. The school said Wednesday that the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter “engaged in serious hazing behavior.” Justin Buck is executive vice president of Pi Kappa Alpha national. He said in a statement released to news outlets that the chapter was expelled for a minimum of four years. Buck said fraternity members there “sullied and degraded” the organization’s good name. The university says it has suspended the local chapters of Kappa Sigma, Theta Chi and Sigma Alpha Mu as investigations continue.

Acting U.S. Labor Secretary Julie Su says workers at southern auto plants should be free to unionize without employer or political interference, even as some southern states pass new laws meant to inhibit organized labor. Su told The Associated Press in a Thursday interview that recent votes show all workers, even southern ones, are interested in unions. The United Auto Workers is pursuing a campaign to organize southern auto plants after winning new contracts with Detroit's automakers. Workers at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, voted last week to join the UAW. But Southern states are pushing laws to claw back economic incentive dollars if companies recognize unions without a secret ballot election.
