Georgia lawmakers vowed they were going to rein in tax breaks for businesses this year, but their efforts came to nothing. Gov. Brian Kemp on Tuesday vetoed a bill to pause for two years a sales tax exemption the state gives for building and equipping computer data centers. Kemp’s veto shows how hard it is to root out tax breaks. The dispute in Georgia mirrors fights in states including Virginia, where data centers are sparking a backlash. So many data centers are opening in Georgia that it is causing a drain on the power grid. The International Energy Agency says electrical consumption from data centers worldwide could double by 2026.

Voting rights advocates have created a new initiative to increase Black voter turnout ahead of this fall's general election. The Young Black Lawyers' Organizing Coalition has recruited lawyers and law students from historically Black colleges and universities. They recently launched a four-state tour to engage with Black voters in Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas. Their goal is to restore faith in democracy by better understanding their experiences with voter registration and ballot-box access. The coalition's law students will lead small focus groups in places like barber shops, churches, and union halls. It's an unusual role for lawyers, but the coalition is counting on their civic expertise.

A group of Tennesseans who say they were intimidated into not voting in a primary election or were threatened with prosecution after they did vote have filed a challenge to two state laws that require primary voters to be “bona fide” members of the party they vote for. The laws are intended to discourage so-called crossover voting, where members of one party vote in another party’s primary in order to interfere. The lawsuit claims they actually intimidate otherwise legitimate voters from exercising their constitutional rights. Tennessee voters do not register by party, and the laws do not define what it means to be a bona fide party member.
