Tensions are growing on the UCLA campus as law enforcement officers order a large group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators to disperse. The heavy police presence comes as administrators and campus police are facing intense criticism for failing to act quickly to stop an overnight attack on a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus by counter-demonstrators. Supporters of the encampment including other students and alumni are largely staying put on the campus steps as they listen to speakers and engage in chants. Students are gathered again in the encampment after reconstructing barricades. Elsewhere police have dismantled an encampment at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and activists clashed with police at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Duane Eddy, a pioneering guitar hero whose reverberating electric sound on instrumentals such as “Rebel Rouser,” “Forty Miles of Bad Road" and “Cannonball” helped put the twang in early rock ‘n’ roll and influenced George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen and countless other musicians, has died at age 86. With his raucous rhythms, and backing hollers and hand claps, Eddy sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and mastered a distinctive sound based on the premise that a guitar’s bass strings sounded better on tape than the high ones.

Florida’s ban on most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy has gone into effect, and some doctors are concerned that women in the state will no longer have access to needed health care. Fertility specialist Dr. Leah Roberts says the anti-abortion laws being enacted by Florida and other red states are being vaguely written by people who don’t understand medical science. Many women don’t even know they are pregnant by six weeks. The ban went into effect Wednesday and affects not just women who want to terminate viable pregnancies because of personal choice, but also nonviable pregnancies for women who want to have babies.

North Carolina Republicans are advancing legislation to spend hundreds of millions of dollars now to eliminate a large waiting list for scholarships to attend private schools and to meet expected higher demand ahead. The Senate Appropriations Committee voted Wednesday for legislation that would spend another $248 million in the coming year to eliminate a waiting list of 54,900 applicants for K-12 schools. This is happening because GOP legislators dramatically expanded the program last year by doing away with income eligibility caps that had limited the scholarships, resulting in lots of applications. The bill also would spend $216 million more for the program in fall 2025.
