Attorneys for a woman who had challenged Kentucky's near-total ban on abortion have dropped the lawsuit. The attorneys filed a motion Friday seeking to voluntarily dismiss the lawsuit but did not give a reason why. The lawsuit had been filed last year in state court in Louisville on behalf of a woman who was about seven weeks pregnant at the time. The lawsuit challenged Kentucky’s near-total trigger law ban and a separate six-week ban. The trigger law took effect when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Americans are losing an array of people and programs dedicated to keeping them healthy. State and local health departments responsible for invisible but critical work including inspecting restaurants, monitoring wastewater for new and harmful germs, responding to outbreaks — and a host of other tasks to protect both individuals and communities — are being hollowed out. The Trump administration is cutting health spending on an unprecedented scale, pulling $11 billion of direct federal support and laying off tens of thousands of workers at national health agencies that support local public health work. It wants billions more slashed.

Despite being nearly wiped off the map by the remnants of Hurricane Helene, tiny Chimney Rock Village in North Carolina had optimistically predicted it would be open for business by Memorial Day. But in the days leading up to the holiday, a security guard at the town's entrance still turns away all but locals and construction workers. Mayor Peter O'Leary admits Main Street likely won't reopen until summer sometime. He said nearly a third of businesses were destroyed by last September's flooding. While some are likely gone forever, there are signs of progress. Amish volunteers from Pennsylvania are rebuilding wrecked shops and inns. The state is close to finishing a temporary bridge for Chimney Rock State Park to reopen. O'Leary says the long rebuild will be worth it.
