A transgender Tennessee woman has sued the state’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security after officials refused to change the sex on her driver's license to match her gender identity. The lawsuit filed in state court under the pseudonym Jane Doe on Tuesday says the department acted illegally by updating its policies last year without following the Tennessee Uniform Administrative Procedures Act. That requires public notice and public comment before an administrative rule is adopted. The department previously permitted a change to the sex designator on a Tennessee driver's license with certain documentation. The lawsuit claims the new policy violates Doe’s constitutional rights to privacy, free speech, equal protection and due process.
A bill designed to ban LGBTQ+ Pride flags in Tennessee public school classrooms has been spiked after failing to attract enough support in the GOP-controlled Senate. The proposal had easily cleared the similarly Republican-dominant House nearly two months prior after the bill’s sponsor said he had parents complain about “political flags” in classrooms. However, the proposal dragged in the Senate as lawmakers debated possible changes and delayed debating the measure up until the final week of this year’s legislative session.
The North Carolina General Assembly starts its annual work session with a little extra money to spend and limited pressing issues to address. Republicans leading the House and Senate are talking about the traditionally “short” session that starts Wednesday with a goal of finishing by early summer. The legislature’s chief duty in even-numbered years is to adjust the second year of the two-year government operating budget that’s already enacted. That could include looking at how to fund more private-school scholarships after an application boom. Legislation forcing local sheriffs to assist with federal immigration enforcement also could reach Democratic Gov. Cooper's desk. Republicans hold narrow veto-proof majorities.

The legislation would impact future incentive packages. It comes as several Southern governors have oppose a unionization push at auto manufacturers.Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed similar legislation on Monday. Tennessee has a similar law in place.

David Joseph Gietzen struck a police officer with a pole during a mob’s Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Gietzen told U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols on Tuesday that he didn’t intend to hurt anybody that day. But the judge noted that Gietzen hasn't expressed any remorse for his actions. After a jury convicted Gietzen of eight counts, he disregarded a court order to report to prison last October while awaiting sentencing. He was arrested at his mother's home last December.
