A North Carolina man who became a fugitive after a federal jury convicted him of assaulting police officers during the U.S. Capitol riot has been sentenced to six years in prison. David Joseph Gietzen struck a police officer with a pole during a mob’s Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Gietzen told U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols on Tuesday that he didn’t intend to hurt anybody that day. But the judge noted that Gietzen hasn't expressed any remorse for his actions. After a jury convicted Gietzen of eight counts, he disregarded a court order to report to prison last October while awaiting sentencing. He was arrested at his mother's home last December.

Police say a man accused of firing a gun during an argument on a North Carolina university campus has been taken in custody. Police say the man is in his 70s and got into an argument with another person Tuesday outside a campus student center. Law enforcement say no one was reported injured after the suspect fired off four rounds. The suspect was taken into custody to be questioned by investigators. He has not been charged. The other person in the argument was also interviewed.

A federal judge has halted the enforcement of a North Carolina law that made it a serious crime for someone to vote while still on probation or parole for a felony conviction when they had simply violated the voting law by mistake. Monday's ruling was celebrated by groups representing poor residents and Black union members. The decision though is limited by addressing some allegations of illegal voting conducted before 2024. That’s because the General Assembly amended the law so moving forward the offender must know voting is unlawful. Advocates say leaving the pre-2024 law in place would have made some ex-felons still fearful about voting in the future.

The U.S. Justice Department is paying a $138.7 million to settle more than 100 claims that it badly mishandled allegations of sexual assault against Larry Nassar in 2015 and 2016. It was a critical time gap that allowed the sports doctor to continue preying on victims before his arrest. Nassar worked at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics. He’s serving decades in prison for assaulting female athletes, including Olympians. For more than a year, FBI agents in Indianapolis and Los Angeles had knowledge of allegations against Nassar but apparently took no action.
